Jorge Mario
Bergoglio (Buenos Aires, Argentina, 17 de diciembre de 1936), es el 266° y
actual papa de la Iglesia
católica y jefe de Estado de la
Ciudad del Vaticano.
Fue elegido el 13 de marzo de 2013 por los
miembros del Colegio Cardenalicio, tras la renuncia al cargo de Benedicto XVI, en
la quinta votación efectuada durante el segundo día de cónclave.
Es el primer
pontífice originario del continente americano, el primer hispano desde
Alejandro VI y el primero no europeo desde 741, año en el que falleció el sirio
Gregorio III. Además es el primero perteneciente a la Compañía de Jesús.
Anteriormente, tras
la muerte del papa Juan Pablo II el 2 de abril de 2005, fue considerado uno de
los candidatos a ocupar el lugar del sumo pontífice, cargo para el que fue
elegido finalmente Joseph Ratzinger, quien adoptó el nombre papal de Benedicto
XVI.
Fue presidente de la Conferencia Episcopal
Argentina durante dos períodos. Impedido por el estatuto de asumir un nuevo
mandato, durante la 102.ª asamblea plenaria de ese organismo se eligió al
arzobispo de la arquidiócesis de Santa Fe de la Vera Cruz , José María
Arancedo, para sucederlo.
